DNS leak: Your DNS queries (which reveal the websites you visit) are sent outside the VPN tunnel to your ISP's DNS servers instead of the VPN's servers. This exposes your browsing history even when connected to a VPN.
WebRTC leak: Browser WebRTC APIs can expose your real IP address through STUN requests, bypassing the VPN entirely. This happens at the browser level, not the network level. Both compromise privacy but through different mechanisms-test for both with our DNS and WebRTC tools.
IP reputation is a score assigned to an IP address based on its history. If an IP has been used for spam, malware distribution, or other malicious activity, it gets a poor reputation.
A bad IP reputation can cause: emails landing in spam folders, frequent CAPTCHAs, blocked access to certain websites, or flagged transactions. If you're using a VPN and encounter these issues, try switching servers-some VPN IPs get flagged due to abuse by other users. Check your current IP with our IP Reputation tool.
Use obfuscation (also called "stealth mode" or "camouflage") when:
- In restrictive countries - China, Iran, Russia, UAE, and others actively block VPN protocols
- ISP throttling - Your ISP detects and slows down VPN traffic
- Network restrictions - Schools, workplaces, or public WiFi that block VPNs
Obfuscation disguises VPN traffic as regular HTTPS, making it harder to detect. Trade-off: it adds 10-20% latency. If you're just browsing privately in a free country, standard protocols like WireGuard are faster. Learn more in our VPN Protocols guide.
Yes, expect 10-30% speed reduction due to:
- Encryption overhead - Processing time to encrypt/decrypt data
- Server distance - Routing through a VPN server adds latency
- Server load - Busy servers perform slower
However, if your ISP throttles certain traffic (streaming, torrenting), a VPN might actually improve speeds by hiding what you're doing. Test with our Speed Test both with and without VPN to compare. WireGuard protocol typically offers the best performance.

Bypassing geo-blocks is a gray area:

- Platforms can terminate accounts, though enforcement against individuals is rare
- It's not typically a criminal offense in Western countries
